Genetic Counseling/ Hereditary and Familial Cancer

Approximately, 10-20% of cancers are linked to inherited faulty genes. Most cancers develop as a result of combination of faulty genes passed on from one generation to the next. Clinic of genetic counseling for hereditary and familial cancer was run at Motamed Institute in order to meet the needs of patients diagnosed with cancer and healthy individuals. The missions of the genetic counseling clinic are:

  • To conduct genetic counseling
  • To determine the risk of developing cancer
  • To  develop approaches to cancer prevention
  • To assess the need for referrals to specialty services for further genetic evaluations

 

More than 50 Hereditary and Familial Cancers have been identified at this center. The most majority of cancers in dominant inheritance pattern occur on the basis of mutations with high penetrating power.

 

Genetic counselors at ACECR Breast Cancer Institute, Specialty and Subspecialty clinics identify individuals at high risk for inherited breast cancer based on personal or family health histories.
