The kit for extracting exosomes from cell culture medium has been produced and optimized.
According to the Public Relations of ACECR, Dr. Zahra Sadat Hashemi, a Ph.D. specialist in medical biotechnology and a faculty member of the Motamed Cancer Research Institute, mentioned: Exosome therapy is a novel treatment gaining attention worldwide and is a subset of cell therapy. She said: Since obtaining exosomes required significant expenses, high expenses of importing from out of the country, a time-consuming process, and access to primary resources for exosome preparation, and considering the country's need for this innovative therapy in regenerative medicine, our research team initiated the production and optimization of a kit for extracting exosomes from cell culture medium. Eventually, with the dedication and diligence of the team members, this project concluded, and the produced kit, titled "Exosome-Med," has reached the commercialization phase.
Dr. Hashemi emphasized that the use of this kit, which has been optimized with readily available raw materials, eliminates the need to import exosomes from abroad. She explained on this content about exosomes: Exosomes are small secretory vesicles on the nanoscale that are released into the extracellular space by various types of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and play a key role in intercellular communication. These small vesicles have properties very similar to their parent cell, but they lack a nucleus. Therefore, the next generation of cell-based therapies is moving towards exosome therapy, and non-cellular therapies are being developed. Additionally, compared to parent cells, exosomes are more stable in the bloodstream, and can pass through the blood-brain barrier, and reduce inherent safety risks like blood vessel obstruction.
She continued: This kit has the capability for large-scale separation and has been fully optimized to suit Iran's conditions with regard to access to raw materials. Therefore, with the help of this kit, the door will be opened to perform all clinical and therapeutic applications of exosomes, which have recently been gaining momentum worldwide and are being added to these applications annually. These applications include using as natural and targeted carriers for chemotherapeutic drugs, markers for monitoring the progress of challenging diseases' treatments, and biological markers for disease prognosis.
Regarding the current status of this project, a faculty member of the Motamed Cancer Research Institute stated: All research and development in designing stages for the Exosome-Med kit have been completed, and the production process has been designed, taking into account all the complexities of this process. Currently, this production-oriented project has been completed, and fortunately, the product is ready for introducing to the market. However, it is initially planned to use this kit for research applications, and after approval from the Food and Drug Administration in the medical equipment sector, it will be used for clinical purposes.
Hashemi declared: Since this kit falls under the category of biological kits and its final product will be used for clinical purposes, due to its significance, it naturally requires strict approvals and licenses from relevant organizations. However, considering the Motamed Cancer Research Institute's pioneering role in the field of cell therapy and exosome therapy, all necessary facilities for obtaining these licenses are available. With the dedication of the Exosome-Med team, it is hoped that this goal will be achieved in the near future.
Regarding the level of trust in the youth within Jahad University and the role of enhancing the spirit of "we can," a faculty member of the Motamed Cancer Research Institute said: According to the statements of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, the most important characteristic of Jahad University as an active institution is to utilize the energy of the second and third generations of the revolution, who, with expertise and Jahadist thinking, seek progress and development for our dear country. Therefore, with the support of Jahad University, the platform of trust for motivated youth has been facilitated, enabling them to serve in the best possible way and put their dreams into action.
Regarding the role of Jahad University in the progress of the country's knowledge-based sector, she added: Jahad University serves as a bridge and intermediary between the university and industry, creating a connection between science and action. In essence, with the help of specialized forces, it is the country's entity through which knowledge-based advancements take shape, where knowledge and technology are inseparable assets. The country's ongoing progress owes much to the entry of specialized and committed forces into the field of technology, where science, faith, and action are intertwined.
